If you’re looking for a mattress that’s better for your health in Austin, TX, Austin Natural Mattress is the place to start. We carry certified organic and natural mattresses from brands that meet strict standards for materials and manufacturing. No chemical flame retardants. No fiberglass. No off-gassing foams.
This is not just a product we carry, for over 25 years this has been our focus.
What Does “Non-Toxic Mattress” Actually Mean?
A non-toxic mattress avoids materials that off-gas harmful chemicals into your bedroom. This includes flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates, PFAS (“forever chemicals”), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The problem is that “non-toxic” isn’t a regulated term in the mattress industry. Any mattress company can claim it. The only way to verify the claim is through third-party certifications and transparency about what’s actually inside the mattress.
Every mattress we carry at Austin Natural Mattress comes with documentation. We can tell you exactly what’s in it and show you the certifications to back it up. If you want to understand how misleading marketing works in this industry, read our guide to greenwashing in the mattress industry.
Materials We Trust
We select brands based on the materials they use and how those materials are processed. Here’s what you’ll find in the mattresses on our floor.
Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. In a mattress, it typically appears in the cover and quilting layers.
Beyond being chemical-free, organic cotton breathes well. It allows air to circulate and helps regulate temperature throughout the night. Conventional cotton, by contrast, is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops grown and often undergoes chemical bleaching.
Look for GOTS certification (Global Organic Textile Standard). This verifies the cotton is organic from field to finished fabric.
Natural Latex
Natural latex comes from the sap of rubber trees. It creates a resilient, supportive material that contours to the body without trapping heat the way synthetic foams do.
There’s an important distinction between natural and organic latex. Natural means it comes from rubber trees. Organic, certified under GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard), means the rubber was grown and processed without synthetic chemicals. Both are good options. The key is knowing which you’re getting.
For a deeper look at latex types and what to look for, see our latex mattress buyer’s guide.
Wool
Wool is a natural flame barrier. It meets federal flammability standards without any chemical treatment, which is why it’s used in place of synthetic flame retardants in organic mattresses.
Wool also regulates temperature by wicking moisture away from the body. It resists dust mites, mold, and mildew. For sleepers with allergies or chemical sensitivities, wool creates a cleaner sleep environment than synthetic alternatives.
Organic wool, certified under GOTS, comes from sheep raised without synthetic pesticides on their pastures.
Certifications That Mean Something
Third-party certifications are the only reliable way to verify non-toxic claims. These are the ones we look for:
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Certifies organic cotton and wool from farm to finished fabric.
- GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): Certifies organic latex from plantation to finished foam.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests finished textiles for harmful substances.
- GREENGUARD Gold: Certifies low chemical emissions, including for sensitive populations.
- MADE SAFE: Screens for known toxic chemicals including flame retardants and heavy metals.
- FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): Verifies responsible sourcing of natural latex when applicable.
If a mattress claims to be non-toxic but carries no third-party certifications, the claim is marketing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between “organic” and “natural” mattresses?
Organic mattresses are certified by third parties (GOTS, GOLS) that verify materials are grown and processed without synthetic chemicals. Natural mattresses use minimally processed natural materials but may not carry certifications. Both avoid the synthetic foams and chemical flame retardants found in conventional mattresses.
Are natural mattresses good for allergy sufferers?
Yes. Mattresses made with organic cotton, natural latex, and wool naturally resist dust mites, mold, and common allergens. They also avoid the chemical off-gassing that can irritate sensitive individuals.
What harmful chemicals do traditional mattresses contain?
Common offenders include chemical flame retardants (antimony, formaldehyde, PBDEs), fiberglass fire barriers, phthalates, PFAS, and volatile organic compounds from petroleum-based foams. These can off-gas into indoor air over time. All the mattresses we carry avoid these chemicals.
How can I be sure a mattress is truly non-toxic?
Look for third-party certifications like GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX, and GREENGUARD Gold. Ask to see documentation for the finished product, not just individual components. Every mattress we carry comes with verifiable certifications.
Are natural mattresses durable?
Yes. Natural latex and high-quality organic materials are more durable than synthetic foams, which can break down and sag within a few years. Many of the mattresses we carry include warranties ranging from 15-30 years.
Why should I buy from a local Austin store?
You get direct access to people who know these products inside and out. No sales pressure. Just honest answers about materials, construction, and what might work best for your situation. You will also have the opportunity to test many of the top organic and natural brands side by side so that differences in comfort and be measured and determined in real time.
