Do Fire Retardant Chemicals Really Prevent Fires?

Dr. David Heimbach testified on behalf of the chemical industry, stating that he treated a 7 week old girl who ultimately died from burns started when a candle fell on a chemical free pillow. However, upon further investigation, Heimback admitted to making the story up. While this story was made up, the question remains; would furniture, whether it’s a mattress, sofa or pillow, which was sprayed with fire retardant chemicals, stop a situation like this. If you ask the chemical companies, they would tell you yes, but when tested at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Donald Lucas, a flammability scientist found…

Fire retardants in mattresses, who’s behind it?

No Fire Brown proposal targets flame retardants “…and the chemical industry has spent millions fighting changes that would hurt its business.” Los Angeles Times California plans to alter rules on flame retardants “Studies show the chemicals migrate out of products into household dust ingested by people, especially young children who play on the floor and often put things in their mouths.” Chicago Tribune

Infant Exposure to VOCs from Crib Mattresses

Recently the University of Texas Engineering department did a study of VOCs, Volatile Organic Compounds, found in crib mattresses. Most crib mattresses consist of either Polyurethane or Polyester Foam padding, and are encased within a thin, waterproof plastic cover to protect the mattress foam and to provide an easy to clean surface. These materials are treated with chemicals to satisfy Fire Safety regulations, along with a desire to achieve a marketable product that is pleasing to the touch, easy to clean and waterproof. All chemicals have what’s called VOCs, which are omitted into the air we breath, and subsequently inhaled…
