Ever walked into a mattress store and felt confused by all the claims? “Natural,” “eco-friendly,” “plant-based”, the labels are everywhere. But when you look at the fine print, that “natural bed” is usually still mostly petroleum foam with just an organic-looking cover on top.
At Austin Natural Mattress, we do things differently. Since opening in 1999, we’ve specialized in natural and certified-organic mattresses that meet strict independent standards throughout their construction, no greenwashing, no shortcuts. We also carry luxury options for those who want the finest natural craftsmanship. As your locally owned Austin mattress store, we believe you deserve to know exactly what you’re sleeping on every night.
What Makes Our Mattresses Truly Natural and Organic?
We hand-pick every mattress in our showroom for verified materials and clean construction—no marketing buzzwords, just real results. For those who want the ultimate sleep experience, we also carry luxury, handcrafted beds made with the finest natural materials.
Our mattresses feature:
- GOLS-certified organic latex (≥95% organic latex by weight; no synthetic/blended latex).
- GOTS-certified textiles (cotton & wool) verified from farm through processing to the finished product.
- Low-emissions builds (look for third-party programs like GREENGUARD Gold on select models).
Why Natural Mattresses Are Perfect for Austin’s Climate
Austin’s hot nights and high humidity make your choice of bed more important than you might think for healthy sleep. Natural materials perform differently in our Texas climate compared to synthetic alternatives.
- Better Micro-Climate Control
Natural latex and wool breathe and wick away moisture, helping to manage the humidity that builds up while you sleep. This is something warm sleepers in Austin especially notice during our long summer months. - Lower Odor for Sensitive Noses
Many of our customers who couldn’t tolerate the petroleum-foam smells from conventional mattresses have a much gentler experience with our low-emission organic options. - Long Service Life for Better Value
High-quality natural latex mattresses are known for their excellent durability when properly constructed and cared for, often lasting significantly longer than many conventional foam beds. - Consistent Feel
Natural latex mattresses maintain a more consistent feel across Austin’s seasonal temperature changes compared to typical petroleum foam mattresses that get firmer when cold and softer when hot.
A Different Kind of Mattress Shopping Experience
You can’t test a bed online. A natural mattress feels completely different from memory foam or traditional springs. What works for your neighbor might not work for your sleep position, body weight, or temperature preferences.
- We Take Time to Understand Your Needs
We’ll have a real conversation about your current mattress, how you sleep, whether you run hot or cold, and any comfort concerns—then guide you to the natural mattress options that make sense for you. - Compare Materials Side-by-Side
Our showroom lets you feel the differences between Dunlop and Talalay latex, organic cotton versus wool, and various firmness levels—something impossible when shopping online. - No Pressure, Honest Advice
We’re here to help you find what works for your body and sleep needs, not push our most expensive option. Take your time testing different natural and organic materials. - Local Service You Can Count On
When a brand offers a sleep trial, we handle the details locally. Have questions months later? Just give us a call directly, no phone trees or chatbots.
Your Questions About Natural Mattresses, Answered
What’s the difference between a natural mattress and an organic mattress?
Natural mattresses use materials like natural latex, wool, and cotton without synthetic additives. Certified organic mattresses go a step further; materials and processing are verified by independent standards like GOTS (textiles) and GOLS (latex).
How does natural latex feel compared to memory foam?
Natural latex is responsive and bouncy; it springs back immediately when you move, unlike memory foam, which slowly returns to its shape. Most people find latex beds better for combination sleepers since you don’t get stuck in one position.
Do organic mattresses smell when new?
All new beds can have some initial scent when unpacked. However, certified-organic and natural builds typically have much lower VOC emissions and no chemical smell. Look for GREENGUARD Gold certification for verified low emissions on select models.
How do I know which firmness is right for me?
This depends on your sleep position, body weight, and personal preference. Side sleepers usually prefer softer surfaces for pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers often need firmer support. The best way to know is to test different options in our Austin showroom.
