| In 2007, fire retardant standards radically changed in the U.S. The new standards were lobbied for by special interest groups including cigarette manufacturers and chemical industries, and eventually they were pushed through Congress. In order to achieve the new rigid standards put in place, non-organic mattress manufacturers now have to use toxic chemicals in fire retardants that are sprayed on the fabrics of their mattresses. These chemicals include formaldehyde, antimony, PDBE’s, and other harmful chemicals.
To make matters worse, many manufactures of regular mattresses use non-organic, petrochemical based materials in the construction of their mattresses. The toxic chemicals used in the fire retardants and the production of the mattress itself then off gas into your bedroom. As you sleep, your body absorbs these chemicals and you also breathe them in throughout the night. Why are traditional mattresses potentially harmful? What are some the benefits of a more natural mattress? How much should you spend if you’re considering making the switch?
