Co-Sleeping: Make Sure Your Mattress Is Organic

Recent medical studies indicate that mothers and their children benefit from co-sleeping. Such proximity allows for regular breastfeeding and other nurturing actions. Regular breastfeeding reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). However, sharing a bed with a baby also exposes the baby to toxins typically contained in adult mattresses. If you want the advantages of co-sleeping, consider switching to a non-toxic mattress.

Typical adult mattresses contain toxic gases that are not safe for babies. The mattresses are often constructed with a variety of petroleum-based chemicals, toxic foams, and synthetic fabrics. Repeated exposure to the low levels of these gases and chemicals is unhealthy, with babies being particularly vulnerable. For the safest sleep, switch your mattress.

A mattress that is made from organic cotton is the safest and most comfortable option for mothers wanting to co-sleep with their baby. However, be sure to protect the mattress from accidental spills; select a non-toxic covering. Also, be aware that pure organic cotton mattresses are not fire-resistant, so must be purchased only with a doctor’s prescription or can be purchased with a wool wrap for fire protection purposes.

Organic mattresses suitable for co-sleeping are widely available from a number of sources. Other options include cotton futon pads or other organic materials. When choosing bedding, be sure you or your baby is not allergic to the materials. While the advantages of co-sleeping are strong, you can also choose to tuck your baby down into their own toxic-free bassinet or cradle next to your bed, bringing the baby into your bed frequently for nursing.

The health of your baby is the primary concern. Co-sleeping is an excellent technique for nurturing, but you want to ensure your baby is not exposed to unnecessary toxins.
